Monarch Update! |
Here's the chrysalis, on Day 2. It's already a bit darker than it was yesterday morning. As the butterfly-to-be inside develops the exterior becomes transparent, until just before it emerges, the orange and black of the butterfly can be clearly seen.
Today I counted 18 caterpillars, and I found one ten feet away from the milkweed garden, working its way up the front of our porch. I returned it to the stand of milkweed, because I'm an interfering busybody. LOL
In the photo to the right, there are six, count 'em, six caterpillars visible. The most difficult one to see is under the leaf in the upper right, and that's because you're looking at it head-on.
The smaller ones are sometimes hard to find, both because they're not as big but also because they're solid green. The stripes develop as they grow. (There aren't any of those in this shot, as far as I know.)
I'll keep updating this, in case anyone's interested!

I'm interested, Liddyness. I once found a chrysalis. Kept it until it hatched. My Ma and I watched a beautiful butterly emerge. Please keep us posted.

I will keep up with this, since you've asked, Princess.
Butterflies are marvelous - they start out their lives as a mundane and lowly form of life, and become such a different, beautiful and delightful creature. And they're hardy enough to fly across the Gulf!
Glad your chrysalis hatched. And that you let it go.

Jolene, your daughters are showing scientific curiousity, which is good. As for leaving nautre outside, it could be worse. They're not bringing in snakes! LOL
We had a lot of pets when I was a child. Hamsters, snakes, an iguana, mice (to feed to the snakes--once the pet store owner realized what my brother was doing with all those mice he bought, we had to raise our own!), a horned toad, and of course we always had at least one cat.

I'm an absolute butterfly freak - I think they are the MOST beautiful creatures in the entire world. If you saw my writing room you would definitely think I'm obsessed, lol.
What fab pictures!!!!!!
How goes the roughing it without a kitchen? Just thinking about you!!

Great pictures Liddy, thanks for the updates.
Here's a funny joke I came across. 25th Anniversary Married 25 years, I took a look at my wife one day and said, "Honey, 25 years ago, We had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10 inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep every night with a young beautiful 25 year old blond.
Now, we have a nice house, nice car, big bed and 50? plasma screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 50 year old woman. It seems to me that you are not holding up your side of things."
My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 25 year old blond, and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, sleeping on a sofa bed....
